Types of masonry: brick, stone, block and veneer
Most homes in the area use brick, natural stone, concrete block, or a masonry veneer. Each one is repaired a little differently, so knowing what you have helps you understand the repair you need.
Brick
Clay brick is the most common masonry on homes in Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland. Brick itself lasts a long time; the mortar joints between bricks usually wear out first. Repairs include tuckpointing the joints and replacing cracked or spalling bricks.
Natural stone
Stone walls and veneers vary by type of stone. Repairs focus on mortar joints and on resetting loose stones. Matching the color and texture of existing stone takes care.
Concrete block
Concrete masonry units (CMU) are common in foundations, garages and commercial buildings. Block is strong but porous, so it is often coated or sealed. Cracks in block foundations should be checked for structural movement.
Masonry veneer
Many newer homes have brick or stone veneer: a single layer of masonry tied to a wood or steel frame, with an air gap behind it. Veneer relies on flashing and weep holes at the bottom of the wall to let water out. Blocked weeps or missing flashing can trap water behind the veneer.
Choosing repair over replacement
Most masonry problems can be repaired without rebuilding the wall: repointing failed joints, replacing damaged units, and fixing the water source, such as a leaking gutter. See brick and stone masonry repair, or call (219) 743-0451 for a free on-site evaluation.
