What to tell us

When you call or send a request, tell us:

  • Where the damage is, such as a wall, a chimney, steps or a window sill
  • What you see, such as cracks, flaking, loose bricks or missing mortar
  • Whether water is coming inside
  • When you first noticed it, and whether it is getting worse

Why brick and stone deteriorate

Most masonry damage comes from water. Water soaks into brick, stone and mortar, freezes, and expands. Each freeze-thaw cycle widens small cracks. Leaking gutters, downspouts that drain against a wall, and soil or mulch piled against brick keep masonry wet and speed this up.

Cracks

Hairline cracks in mortar are common. Cracks that are widening, that follow a stair-step pattern through the mortar, or that come with doors and windows that stick can point to movement in the structure. If a crack suggests a foundation or structural problem, we will tell you so you can have it assessed by the right professional before masonry repair.

Common questions

Can damaged bricks be replaced without redoing the whole wall?

Yes, in most cases. Damaged bricks can be cut out and replaced individually, and the mortar around them repointed.

Will new brick match the old brick?

We look for brick that is close in size, color and texture. An exact match is not always possible with older brick, and we will tell you what to expect before work starts.

Is efflorescence (white stains) a sign of damage?

The white deposits are salts left behind as water dries out of masonry. They are not damage by themselves, but they show that water is moving through the wall.
